It is always nice to report a heart-warming story. Some of you might be familiar with the Rutgers football player that was injured in a game and paralyzed. Last week, after the NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did something amazing for that player. The Buccs signed Eric LaGrand to a contract despite the fact that he will be unable to ever step foot on a football field for them.

“Leading up to the draft, I couldn’t help but think that this should’ve been Eric’s draft class,” said Schiano. “This small gesture is the least we could do to recognize his character, spirit, and perseverance. The way Eric lives his life epitomizes what we are looking for in Buccaneer Men.”

Don’t forget, you have a test tomorrow on Manifest Destiny! There is extra help today after school.

The Weekend of 5/5

I just finished watching the Reds game from last night. It is always nice when the team gets a convincing, 6-1 victory. The Reds currently stand at 13-12. In a little more than a week the Reds will be invading New York for 2 games against the Mets and then 3 against the Yankees.
Speaking of the Yankees, what a terrible injury for Mariano Rivera. I suppose the good news is that Rivera has vowed to return…even if it is next year.
The Yankees might have their struggles but I think they’ll be okay with Soriano and Robertson at the end of the bullpen.

Last weekend I stopped by the Strike Out Cancer baseball and softball games. The 8th grade baseball game was well played, other than a poorly played inning on defense. The good news is that the errors in that inning did not lead to any runs. Off the top of my head (and one week later) I recall seeing Jordan, Ryan, Andrew, Keigo, Cameron, Robert and Matt at the game. I even ran into Michael E. who was working in the cage on his swing.
The softball game was the Schreiber JV team. That team also included several former Green House students. I’m not sure of the outcome of that game but it was nice to see many former students.
It was also nice to spend a few bucks for a good cause.
The coaches and players worked hard to make that day a success.

Speaking of sports, don’t forget that Sports Physicals can be completed in school on May 16 and 17. Take advantage of that easy and convenient service. I hate hearing about kids who want to play a sport and find out they don’t have a physical completed. Get it out of the way early and you will be eligible for sports the entire school year.
See the nurse or your physical education teacher for the forms you need. They can probably be found on the school website as well.

Finally, I didn’t get to ask about Career Day. What did you think?
The only concern I had was that some of my students had to hear from a speaker for the 2nd year. Perhaps in the future they can make sure the students get to hear from different speakers every year.
I enjoyed hearing from both speakers. Even if you don’t want to be an author or television editor, you can take from the speakers that you cannot give up when you are told no. You have to keep working and persevere. That is the key to success in any field.

Wednesday, 5/2

Some were wondering earlier today if I would ever be blogging again. Of course I am…I’m not ready to give this up yet.
I had a busy weekend, followed by a day of illness and then a death to someone very close to me. Naturally, blogging wasn’t quite on my mind.
I thank all of you who welcomed me back today. It made coming back a lot easier.
This week is still a bit hectic so I’m not sure if I’ll be posting until next week. Here are a few reminders:
Extra Help is Thursday morning and Monday afternoon.
The Manifest Destiny test will now be Tuesday.
Career day is tomorrow. However all of your core classes will meet.
There is homework tonight. Be sure to check the homework page if you don’t remember the assignment.

All good news on the Reds front: They’ve won 5 of 6 and climbed back to .500. They are still 2 1/2 games behind the dreaded Cardinals but I feel a lot better about the Reds now than I did a week or so ago. Scott Rolen even hit a homerun last night. The Reds will be in really good shape if he gets his sluggish bat going.

I was watching Dora the Explorer with my kids this morning. What’s the deal with Dora? Does she get dressed in the dark or something? White shoes, yellow socks, orange shorts, purple shirt!!! Yikes.

Are We Going Too Far?
School Bans Best Friends
It seems like a sensational headline attached to a slightly mild article. I would never condone youngsters being mean to each other. Everyone has feelings and we should not go out of our way to hurt them. However, making rules about who you can be friends with or if you can have a best friend only delays kids’ ability to cope with rejection. We need to build our ability to overcome adversity. The longer we delay that it could be harder to succeed later on.
What do you think?

Field of Dreams continues today during lunch. It will be a good way to unwind from the math test. I hope to see you there.

Strike Out Cancer

The Port Washington baseball and softball programs are hosting a series of games this Saturday as an opportunity to raise money to fight various forms of cancer.
There will be games played by the 8th grade, JV and Varsity teams at Guggenheim Elementary School beginning at 10 am. Food and beverages will be on sale to raise money.
It looks to be a nice day weather-wise and I’m sure there will be excellent games.

Let me know if you plan on stopping by.

Tomorrow begins the yet another series of state tests. This time it is math. I wish you luck. Remember, you have plenty of time to work. Avoid rushing and making careless errors.
Get a good night’s sleep. Even I’m not staying up to watch the Reds.
I am, however, looking forward to Wednesday’s matchup of Arroyo vs. Barry Zito. Perhaps I’m living in a time warp but I expect that to be a good game.

We’re starting Field of Dreams in Laughs and Lunch today. As I said in class, no one has ever said they didn’t like this movie after watching it during lunch. Give it a shot. I think you’ll like it. I’ll try not to cry at the end…but that might be fun to see also!

I was surprised that students did not know that many facts about the California Gold Rush.  I wasn’t expecting you to know everything but some only knew that it took place in California.  Surely your teachers taught you more than that in elementary school.

I have to give credit to Jake G. for attempting to find out my political affiliation.  After mentioning the primary today, he asked if I am voting.  It would be pretty obvious if I said yes as the only major primary today is for the Republicans.  I wisely saw this coming and declined to answer.  Nice try!

Are Your Parents Registered to Vote?

If not, they should register.
The registration form can be filled in at home and mailed to the following address:
Nassau County Board of Elections
240 Old Country Road (5th flr.)
Mineola, NY 11501-4800

You can find a registration form here.

Remember, there is a Presidential election, along with the House of Representatives and a Senate position at stake in November. Additionally (and perhaps just as important), the school budget vote is May 15. I’ll refrain from sharing my opinion on how you should vote but I’m sure you can figure that out.
However, I will share my opinion that I believe it is your civic duty to vote in elections.

Schreiber Students Shine
I was reading recently on the Port Washington Patch that former Green 7 students were honored at the Suffolk Classical Society’s Annual Certamen contest. Congrats to all of the students, especially Robert and Rachel.

The Mets have a double header with the Giants today. I hope they beat up on the Giants as they will be playing the Reds tomorrow. Furthermore, I hope they take a long time while beating the Giants. The Reds will be well-rested with their day off today.

Did you read today during World Book Night? I read If You Give A Mouse A Cookie (remember that one?) with my kids and enjoyed a tasty cookie afterward as a treat. I tried to read a little of Washington but couldn’t concentrate. I’ll finish that one off soon enough.

The Weekend of 4/21

I just finished reading What Your Tax Sheltered Annuity Advisor Does Not Want You To Know. It was a short book on things that people should know when investing money. Admittedly, I am not the most well versed person when it comes to investing. However, it is something that everyone needs to do.
This book, written by Bob Rule, gave me a good refresher as I look into making adjustments to my investing.
Bob Rule also happens to be the father of former student D.K.
We have some very talented parents in the Green House. It is no wonder that we have such talented students as well.

Remember, Monday is World Book Night. Be sure to devote some time to reading.

World Book Night

Begin planning now. World Book Night is April 23rd.
Of course, every night should include some reading. However, there are many people that absolutely detest reading. Perhaps April 23′s World Book Night can be a springboard into frequent night’s of reading.

I’ve always felt that reading a good piece of fiction is like “reading” a television show. The best part is, you get to be the director/producer/head of casting/etc.

Let me know if you are going to participate in World Book Night.

The last day of ELA Testing. Whew…glad that is over. Just in time for 3 days of math testing next week. We’re also going to have a Social Studies quiz on Monday. There will be Extra Help Monday morning.

If you’ve been watching Sportscenter or reading the newspaper, I’m pretty sure you are aware of the Reds’ dreadful start to the year. I know it is early, but they need to pick it up quickly. They are digging a pretty big hole. Hopefully they can snap their horrible hitting ways this afternoon against the Cardinals.

World Series Rings

I came across this interesting website on World Series Rings. Check it out. Which championship ring do you think is the nicest?
The 2004 Red Sox ring jumped out at me as the nicest. Perhaps I’m a bit biased but I also believe the 1990 Reds ring is nice.

Here are the most recent championship rings for the Yankees (2009), Mets (1986) and Reds (1990) along with the oldest ring.

1922 NY Giants

Interesting that the Cardinals decided to place their rally squirrel on their ring.

I’m sorry that I had to use profanity on my website. However, the website only has an image of “Carpenter”‘s ring.

The squirrel even appeared on Skip Shumaker’s baseball card. In fact, Shumaker isn’t really even on his card.

Those squirrel/Shumaker baseball cards are going for over $50 on ebay!
