Tiger Fan With Lip Tattoo
Recently on Twitter, Justin Verlander offered playoff tickets to anyone with a good reason to deserve them. One of the people who requested the tickets believed he was deserving because he was such a big Tigers fan that he got the Detroit Tigers logo tattooed on his lip.
Check this out:

I don’t know if he already had this or if he did it specifically to win the tickets. Sadly for him, he did not win the tickets.
I tried something similar with my son. It didn’t work either.

DJ should be fine with a tattooed face the rest of his life right? Tony the Tiger had a successful career right?

Did you catch the new look for Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander. The lovable loser has added a hairpiece to his formerly bald dome. Check out the pictures below.

Obviously we can’t tell him what to do. But my opinion is that Jason Alexander should just be himself. On the other hand, perhaps having hair (fake or real) will help him to get parts in shows or movies. He certainly got more publicity in the last 2 days than he’s gotten in 10 years. If it helps him to be more confident/less self-conscious then I guess it makes sense.
What do you think?

Post Season Predictions
Postseason Prediction #1: This post season will not be nearly as exciting as last year’s post season. That is true at least for Reds fans. Even though it didn’t turn out the way I would have liked it to, it was fun to at least have meaningful games in October.
Now for real predictions. Be sure to share your predictions as well.
1. Detroit over the Yankees This was a tough decision but I think the Yankees are a bit banged up. It will also be difficult to beat Verlander twice in a 5 game set. I don’t have a great feeling about this one. I guess the point of my prediction is that the Tigers should not be taken lightly.
2. Rays over the Rangers. The Rays have been playing meaningful games over the past several weeks. They have momentum on their side. They have pretty solid pitching.
3. Brewers over the D-Backs. I watch about 15 Brewers games a year and I can tell you for sure that their starting pitching is solid. Their lineup absolutely scares me and if they’re going to win they have to do it this year while they still have Prince Fielder. Having said that, if they don’t get out to big leads in these games they are going to have trouble. Their bullpen is not a strength although having K-Rod has helped them.
4. The last one is an easy one for me. Phillies over the Cardinals. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this at all but I hate the Cardinals. I’d like to see the Phillies do to the Cardinals what they did to the Reds last year. Everyone knows the Philadelphia starting rotation is one of the best of all time. The lineup they have also stacks up well against great historical lineups. I liked the Hunter Pence addition. Don’t take the Cardinals lightly…they don’t exactly have a weak team. Pujols, Berkman and Holliday are solid. You know how I feel about Carpenter but he is a big money pitcher.
These matchups should be very exciting.
We’ll do Championship Series predictions right before it begins.

Going Down The Slide For the 1,291st Time

Today is the last day of summer vacation for me. It is back to work tomorrow. This is usually when Wyn makes fun of me for having school when he doesn’t. I wonder who will be taking over that job with the current crop of 7th graders.
I’m excited to get back to work but not happy about having my time with my kids reduced big time.
Final Thought…The Reds are going nowhere…we’ve known that for awhile now. But at least they took two of three from the Cardinals to make sure they have no chance of catching the Brewers. Have I mentioned I don’t like the Cardinals? In fact, for those of you who are new to my classroom, Cardinals, Carpenter, Pujols, etc are all bad words in my classroom and we definitely don’t like profanity.

I haven’t spent enough time here on the blog singing the praises of Joey Votto this year…so here goes. The guy is just simply amazing. Yesterday, he had 2 HRs in the double header against the Marlins. He’s hitting well over .320 and is playing pretty good defense. He leads the league in walks and on-base percentage. I wonder what he would be able to do if he had consistent protection in the lineup.
This year was not what Reds fans expected but it would have been far worse without Joey Votto in the lineup every day.
First an earthquake and now a hurricane. Be careful over the next several days.
How about another picture?

This is DJ enjoying Grandpa Dowling’s birthday cake from yesterday. I think he liked it!
A Day Of Firsts
Yesterday was DJ and Casey’s first trip on a train. Who knew that would coincide with our first earthquake. We were just about to get onto the train when the platform started shaking. It seemed odd because I’ve been on plenty of trains and they usually don’t shake the platform. I brushed it off as the construction that was taking place below us. Found out later that we were getting a few tremors.
Thankfully everything was okay.
Did you feel the earthquake? What were you doing? Did you immediately know what was going on? Share your story!
By the way, DJ loved the train. His response was that the train was “cool”!
Casey slept through both trips.
Check out DJ on his first ride. This took place a few weeks ago.

The reigning National League MVP Joey Votto has a chance to have a better season this year than last year. Despite his better numbers, he is not a candidate to be MVP this year. The difference? The Reds aren’t winning. Hats off to Votto for making this a watchable season. I shudder to think about what this season would have been like without Votto.
This has happened to the Reds in the past. Barry Larkin’s best season was 1996, the year after he won the NL MVP.
I just finished another book. This one again had an educational focus. In fact, the book is called Focus. The main idea of the book is that teachers need to spend more time reading, writing and discussing ideas in class rather than doing fancy schmancy techniques in the classroom. Too often we try to dazzle with fun and exciting activities but at the end of the day we aren’t actually learning. I think we do a lot of reading and writing and discussing in Social Studies but perhaps I will focus on this a bit more. I’ve said many times that school is not a trip to the circus. While I don’t want my classes to be bored, I’m not an entertainer. School is for learning and is not a night at the Chucklehut.
More reading and writing means students will be better prepared for college and beyond. That’s what I want from all of my students.

Check Out This Triple Play
I once had a ball bounce off of my head at 1st Base (that explains a lot) but I wasn’t able to make a triple play out of it. I guess I can go with the tired “That’s Using Your Head” line for this video? Any other comments we could make about the play?
I guess we can call this the temporary return of Caption Craziness.
Goodbye 4th Place, Hello 3rd Place!
The Reds have put 4th place in the rear view mirror, hopefully for the remainder of the season. Sadly, they are still 9 1/2 games out of 1st so it is a pretty steep hill to climb. In fact, it is nearly impossible. However, stranger things have happened in baseball with over a month and a half of baseball to play.
The Pirates have totally fallen off, losing 10 straight games. They were a nice story but now appear to be the Pirates of old.
If the Reds are going to win they are going to do it with youngsters…guys you have never heard of unless you heard the names from me. Major contributors lately have been Todd Frazier (in for Rolen), Yonder Alonso, Dave Sappelt, and Zack Cozart with Devin Mesoraco on his way up. Alonso is a sweet swinger but a horrible fielder. I think Mr. Joseph could probably play a better left field than Alonso.
Speaking of Mr. Joseph, I met up with him about a week ago for lunch. We had a good time together and are looking forward to getting back to work (although we didn’t discuss that much!…it was too early in the summer still).
DJ Holding Casey For The First Time

DJ loves his little sister. I can’t explain why he roars like a lion when he sees Casey but that’s what he does. Casey will be 2 months old on Thursday. Talk about time flying by!
Tired! I stayed up later than usual to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm. Good idea at the time but now I’ll be exhausted around 2 today.
This Day In History
1974-President Nixon announces that he will resign as a result of the Watergate Scandal. If you’ve never seen the movie, All The President’s Men, you should. Great movie about how two reporters, Woodward and Bernstein, uncovered what was going on and Nixon’s role. The movie stars two acting legends, Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford.
That’s all for today. I’ll be back later in the week.

The frustrations of Reds fans continue. The Reds have not won two games in a row since June 15th. The silver lining is that they remain only 3 games out of 1st place. Had they been able to string together a hot streak perhaps they would have been able to run away with the division.
The Reds did make some changes yesterday adding rookie sensation Zack Cozart and pitcher Carlos Fisher. Fisher will stay with the team until a starter is needed for Sunday. It is very likely that it will be Dontrelle Willis. Hopefully he will inject some life into an often lifeless team. Paul Janish and Edinson Volquez were demoted to make room for Cozart and Fisher. Volquez has really fallen lately. He went from winning 17 games for the Reds after being traded for Josh Hamilton. He then had Tommy John surgery, was suspended for performance enhancing drugs and has been inconsistent ever since.
Unfortunately for him, Volquez rejected a 4 year deal this past offseason for a one year deal in the hopes that he would be able to get a better deal at a later date. It doesn’t seem like that is going to happen.

Good News
Casey has finally come home! After nearly 2 weeks in the hospital, we were finally able to take our baby home. DJ seems to be working on adjusting. He seems to be a pretty protective brother. He checks on Casey every time she makes a noise and cries when she does.
Here at socialstudieswithasmile.com, we pride ourselves on our constant discussions on food. Usually we talk about things without any regard for the negative impact the fatty foods could have on our health. We’re going to change things up a bit. Did you see the article in the paper about the worst food you can eat…potato chips!
Apparently eating potato chips adds about a pound a year to our frame.
Here’s the article.
I guess if I never had potato chips I’d be about 30 lbs. lighter. I would wither away to nothing!
Thoughts?
Anyone feel any 1986 Mets nostalgia? It seems that The Nationals have replaced Jim Riggleman with former Mets manager Davey Johnson.
Here’s the article on Johnson’s return to MLB after a 10 year absence.
Davey Johnson is a winner. He won the with Mets. In fact, the brought the Mets from laughing stock of the league to league dominators. They became hot right around when I became a baseball fan. It is amazing that I never became a Mets fan because they were what the Yankees are now in the mid-1980s. He took the Mets to the playoffs twice, winning on championship. He then brought the Reds and Orioles to the playoffs as well. Can he do the same with the Nats? Only time will tell but I like his chances with Stasburg and Harper.
Johnson is the 2nd former Reds manager to get a job this week after Jack McKeon got the Marlins job earlier. Apparently being old and former Reds manger is in style.
