The Alamo/Lone Star Republic/Texas Independence
How did the United States accomplish Manifest Destiny?
Texas was a part of Mexico
Americans wanted to settle in Texas but the Spanish would not allow them to.
1821-Spain gave Moses Austin a land grant. Austin died before the colony was set up. His son, Stephen Austin, would lead the colony.
When Mexico gained its independence, the American settlers agreed to worship in the Catholic Church.
Most settlers ignored this rule leading to conflict between the Mexicans and the Texans.
Texans began to fight Mexico for independence
The Alamo is a building in San Antonio
The Texans used it as a fort while being attacked by the Mexicans
Problems: The Texans were poorly equipped, had little food and were outnumbered (6000 vs. 150)
2/23/1836-The attack on the Alamo begins. After being surrounded and attacked for 12 days, the Texans lost and suffered heavy casualties.
"Remember the Alamo"
The Texans wanted revenge.
They planned an attack on the Mexican dictator, Santa Anna. They attacked at San Jacinto. The Texans captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty giving Texas its independence
