Mr. Dowling
New Ideas in the Colonies

How were the colonies affected by the spread of new ideas?

Two major movements-The Great Awakening and The Enlightenment

The Great Awakening

Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield-leaders of the religious movement known as The Great Awakening

"Hellfire and brimstone preaching"-warns listeners to read the Bible carefully and follow its teachings or you would go to hell

The Great Awakening led to many colonists forming new churches. It forced the colonists to become more tolerant of people with different beliefs because there were so many different ways to practice religion.

The Enlightenment
Movement in Europe in the 1600s and 1700s that emphasized the use of reason

John Locke-believed in the goodness of people
Everyone is entitled to the rights of "Life, Liberty and Property." The state(government) is formed to proect these rights.

Locke's ideas influenced the colonists and our founding fathers.

Overall, the Enlightenment led to an increase in culture and ideas.
